Scope and Content First-floor plan of Carnassarie Castle, overlooking Kilmartin valley, Argyll Carnassarie Castle was built in 1565-72 by John Carswell, Bishop of Argyll and the Isles, on the land of his patron, the Earl of Argyll. In 1643, the feudal overlord, the Marquis of Argyll, granted it to the Campbells of Auchenbreck. The first floor contained a wooden-ceilinged hall (right) for public occasions, and, in the main tower, the bishop's great chamber (left) with its decorated fireplace and a private latrine. John Carswell was Rector of Kilmartin and, from 1567, Bishop of Argyll and the Isles. He was responsible for producing the 'Book of Common Order', also known as Knox's 'Liturgy' - the first book printed in Scots Gaelic. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
