Scope and Content Bracketed sill of second-floor chamber in south wall of hall-range of Carnassarie Castle, overlooking Kilmartin valley, Argyll Carnassarie Castle was built in 1565-72 by John Carswell, Bishop of Argyll and the Isles, on the land of his patron, the Earl of Argyll. In 1643, the feudal overlord, the Marquis of Argyll, granted it to the Campbells of Auchenbreck. This all that remains of anorth-eastlaborately moulded window lighting the central room of the second floor of the hall-range. Like the rest of the castle's decorative features, it is a high-quality example of early Renaissance stonework. John Carswell was Rector of Kilmartin and, from 1567, Bishop of Argyll and the Isles. He was responsible for producing the 'Book of Common Order', also known as Knox's 'Liturgy' - the first book printed in Scots Gaelic. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
