Scope and Content Heraldic plaque above main entrance in north-west stair-tower of Carnassarie Castle, overlooking Kilmartin valley, Argyll Carnassarie Castle was built in 1565-72 by John Carswell, Bishop of Argyll and the Isles, on the land of his patron, the Earl of Argyll. In 1643, the feudal overlord, the Marquis of Argyll, granted it to the Campbells of Auchenbreck. This plaque displays the arms of the 5th Earl of Argyll and his first wife, Jean Stewart, illegitimate daughter of King James V (divorced 1573). The Gaelic motto reads 'God be with O Duibhne' - the traditional name for the head of the Clan Campbell. John Carswell was Rector of Kilmartin and, from 1567, Bishop of Argyll and the Isles. He was responsible for producing the 'Book of Common Order', also known as Knox's 'Liturgy' - the first book printed in Scots Gaelic. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
