Scope and Content Inscribed keystone of garden gateway in enclosure of Carnassarie Castle, overlooking Kilmartin valley, Argyll Carnassarie Castle was granted to the Campbells of Auchenbreck in 1643 by the 1st Marquis (8th Earl) of Argyll, probably because of its strategic position. In 1685, the laird, Sir Duncan Campbell, supported the 9th Earl's unsuccessful revolt. This keystone belongs to the gateway probably constructed in 1681 to provide access to the new walled garden. It is inscribed SDC and LHL 1681 for Sir Duncan Campbell (of Auchenbreck) and his wife, Lady Henrietta Lindsay. In 1685, 600 royalists stormed Carnassarie Castle after it was 'blown up by treachery'. They are said to have ignored its subsequent surrender, wounded twenty defenders, killed the laird's uncle, driven off 60 horses, and left the castle in ashes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
