Scope and Content Remains of earlier west wing of Castle Sween, Knapdale, Argyll Sween Castle was probably begun in the late 12th century by Suibhne, the first of the MacSween lords of Knapdale. In 1262, the family lost Knapdale to the king's ally, the earl of Menteith, and subsequently became Irish landowners and mercenaries. The outline, or raggle, of a roof is preserved on the outside of the curtain wall enclosed by the 14th-century west wing. This, and changes in the adjacent masonry, is evidence for an earlier, 13th-century structure. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
