Description Castle Sween. General view of West wall and round tower from North-East.

Date 1983

Catalogue Number AG 13243

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 359769

Scope and Content West wing of Castle Sween, Knapdale, Argyll Sween Castle passed to the Stewart Earls of Menteith in 1262. In the Wars of Independence it was held by Sir John Menteith and John MacDougall of Lorn against the MacDonald Lords of the Isles and the original owners, the MacSweens. Sir John Menteith probably rebuilt and enlarged the earlier west wing around 1300. The latrine-tower (right) empties out onto the cliffs below. John Stewart of Menteith fought against Edward I, but switched sides after the general surrender of 1304, overseeing Wallace's capture. Finally he joined Robert the Bruce who had allied with his MacDonald enemies, and defeated his MacDougall allies. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
