Scope and Content Detail of window-embrasure at first floor level of interior of the west curtain wall at Skipness Castle Skipness Castle was begun before 1261 by the MacSweens, lost to Walter Stewart, Earl of Menteith in 1262, inherited by Robert II, then granted to the Lords of the Isles in 1376. On their forfeiture in 1493, it went to the Campbell Earls of Argyll. This is the interior of a splayed crosslet-loophole in the west curtain wall. This is one of the many defensive devices built into the castle, and would have been used by archers firing arrows at attackers. From the 14th century onwards, tower-houses were built either as 'private lodgings' for the laird's own use within a larger castle complex, or as relatively self-contained fortified residences. They became very popular in the 16th and 17th centuries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
