Scope and Content Tower-house of Skipness Castle, Knapdale, Argyll The tower-house of Skipness Castle was probably built by the Campbell lairds in the early 16th century. It saw service in 1645 when the MacDonalds, the earlier owners, took advantage of the Wars of the Covenant besiege the castle, albeit unsuccessfully. The first two stages of the east wall (left), originally belonged to the 13th-century chamber-block. The ground-floor door (facing) led into the north wing of the medieval east range. To its right is the partly-blocked postern gate. James IV dispossessed the last of the semi-independent - or from the king's perspective, rebellious - MacDonald Lords of the Isles in 1493. The king granted their lands to the Campbell Earl of Argyll who he trusted to control the west coast of Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
