Scope and Content Flanking loophole in gatehouse in south wall of Skipness Castle, Knapdale, Argyll Skipness Castle was upgraded to a stone fortress by the Stewart Earls of Menteith, probably when, with John MacDougall of Lorn's help, John Menteith held Knapdale against the MacSweens and the MacDonald Lords of the Isles. This is one of the two loopholes for archers in the angle between the projecting gatehouse and the curtain-wall. It was partly blocked in the 18th century to make a dovecot. The crossbow and the longbow were used during the Wars of Independence. The crossbow was slower at reloading but had a longer range than the longbow which was mainly used by Welsh mercenaries in English pay. Both could punch through a knight's armour.
