Scope and Content Detail drawing of beam-centre and gudgeon of water-powered beam-engine at Straitsteps Lead Mine, Wanlockhead, Dumfrieshire This water-powered beam-engine probably dates from the late 19th-century, but is the best surviving example of a type of engine in use from the 18th century to pump water out of mineworkings. It was powered by water from a cistern on the hillside above. The pivot, or 'gudgeon', is bolted to the padstone which is notched to accommodate the clamp-plates holding together the two baulks of timber making up the beam. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
