Scope and Content Detail drawing of bucket crosshead of water-powered beam-engine at Straitsteps Lead Mine, Wanlockhead, Dumfrieshire This water-powered beam-engine probably dates from the late 19th-century, but is the best surviving example of a type of engine in use from the 18th century to pump water out of mineworkings. It was powered by water from a cistern on the hillside above. The bucket-spear moved up and down vertically in one spot. This was achieved by a stirrup-like arrangement of hinged link-rods, and also by a system of iron guides bolted to the wooden frame. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
