Scope and Content Elevation and section ('Y-Y') of water-powered beam-engine at Straitsteps Lead Mine, Wanlockhead, Dumfrieshire This water-powered beam-engine probably dates from the late 19th-century, but is the best surviving example of a type of engine in use from the 18th century to pump water out of mineworkings. It was powered by water from a cistern on the hillside above. Water from the cistern filled the bucket in the bucket pit (18). The weight tilted the beam. Next, the valve-plate (16) triggered a simple valve. The water flowed through the outlet (19) and the bucket end of the beam rose. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
