Scope and Content Diagrams of water-powered beam-engine at Straitsteps Lead Mine, Wanlockhead, Dumfrieshire This water-powered beam-engine probably dates from the late 19th-century, but is the best surviving example of a type of engine in use from the 18th century to pump water out of mineworkings. It was powered by water from a cistern on the hillside above. Water from the cistern filled the bucket in the bucket pit (18). The weight tilted the beam, lifting the wooden pump spear (21). Next, a simple valve opened, releasing the water so that the bucket end rose, forcing the spear downwards. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
