Scope and Content Drawing of strut, strainer-beam, stanchion and gantry-beam connection ('C', 'D') at entrance to central machine-hall inside Randolph and Elder Engineering Works, Centre Street, City of Glasgow Randolph and Elder Engineering Works were built between 1858 and 1860. The neo-Egyptian facade made the building both prestigious and outstanding compared to other contemporary factories whose exteriors were often decorated, but less impressively. The stanchion is connected to the gantry-beam with a clamp-plate (C). The struts and the strainer-beams are connected to the stanchion with box sockets (D) and bolted together with tie-rods. Most of the weight of the roof and suspended galleries rests on the gantry-beams supported by four brick columns or 'corner-piers'. This cuts down the need for extra support from iron stanchions, so keeping the shop-floor uncluttered. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
