Scope and Content Detail drawing of reinforcement and gallery-suspension system on gantry-beam of central machine hall inside Randolph and Elder Engineering Works, Centre Street, City of Glasgow Randolph and Elder Engineering Works were built between 1858 and 1860. The neo-Egyptian facade made the building both prestigious and outstanding compared to other contemporary factories whose exteriors were often decorated, but less impressively. Stanchions, helped by tie-rods suspended from the gantry-beam (Q,R), support the side-galleries. Iron bands forming a stirrup (Q,S) reinforce the gantry-beam which is supported by stanchions and struts. Most of the weight of the roof and suspended galleries rests on the gantry-beams supported by four brick columns or 'corner-piers'. This cuts down the need for extra support from iron stanchions, so keeping the shop-floor uncluttered. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
