Scope and Content General view of slate quarries and workers' cottages, Easdale Island, Argyll The quarry on Easdale is one of the many Scottish slate quarries which flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries, especially on the Argyll seaboard and its offshore islands. Workers' dwellings were built in the 18th century to house the workforce near the quarry. They are typical of the slate industry at the time. In most cases, existing settlements were too small and scattered to provide enough workers. The jetty on Easdale Island was built around 1826 and was used to load slate onto boats for export.
