Scope and Content Drawing detail of roof truss ('A') in Engine Works, Fairfield Shipbuilding Yard, Govan, City of Glasgow The Engine Works was constructed after 1869 to when the firm moved from a smaller yard at Centre Street to Fairfield Shipbuilding Yard. It was an improvement on other contemporary works both in its scale, and in the rationality of its design. In the double bridle joint at the lower corner of the roof truss, a bolt holds the pieces of wood together so that the notches in the tie-beam take the roof's weight. The truss rests on the truss-plate, which itself rests on the top of the stanchion head. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
