Scope and Content Aerial view of Murrayfield Rugby Stadium, Edinburgh Murrayfield, the home of the Scottish Rugby Union and one of the world's great international rugby grounds, was built in 1925 on 19 acres of land originally belonging to the Edinburgh Polo Club. In 1994 a new stadium was built at a cost of £50 million. This aerial view shows the partially completed new all-covered all-seated stadium which replaced the old stands and terracing. The new stadium, capable of seating 67,500 spectators, opened with a match between Scotland and South Africa in November 1994. Murrayfield Stadium has also been the venue for a variety of special events, including a youth rally to welcome The Pope in 1982, pop concerts featuring Tina Turner and The Rolling Stones, and an entertainment by the Harlem Globetrotters.
