Scope and Content Former grieve's house from south, Scar Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands Scar is a coastal farm on Sanday, an island which forms part of the Orkney group. Sanday is low-lying and almost treeless with fertile soils and a favourable climate for local agriculture. Scar has an extensive, U-shaped complex of farm buildings. This shows the former grieve's house, renovated in the 1990s for use by the farmer and his family. It stands a little distance from the former three-storeyed farmhouse which is part of the main complex of farm buildings. The buildings on this site originally comprised two houses and a blacksmith's workshop. The grieve, or overseer, was first recorded in Scotland in the mid-18th century when large, commercially productive farms began to appear with the advent of agricultural improvement. The grieve managed the day to day running of the farm and its labourers, reporting directly to the farmer or his factor (manager). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
