Scope and Content Fort at Fendoch, Perth and Kinross This Roman fort is at Fendoch. Built on top of a small plateau, it guarded the route to the Highlands at the Sma' Glen. Reported in the 18th century, subsequent ploughing flattened the ramparts and the fort was forgotten until rediscovery in 1936. This is a view of the site taken during excavation work. It shows the veranda of one of the Barrack buildings. Though the foundations of the building are stone, the rest would have been timber-framed with wattle-and-daub walls. The site was excavated during the 1930s. Though little dateable evidence was found, the fort was built in the first century AD. When the fort was abandoned, the buildings were systematically dismantled, suggesting that this was a planned withdrawal. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
