Scope and Content Fort at Fendoch, Perth and Kinross This Roman fort is at Fendoch. Built on top of a small plateau, it guarded the route to the Highlands at the Sma' Glen. Reported in the 18th century, subsequent ploughing flattened the ramparts and the fort was forgotten until rediscovery in 1936. This is a view of the site taken during excavation work. It shows some of the post-holes from one of the towers by the N gate. There would have been a tower at either side of the gateway with enough room in-between for a carriage to pass - about 3 m. The site was excavated during the 1930s. Though little dateable evidence was found, the fort was built in the first century AD. When the fort was abandoned, the buildings were systematically dismantled, suggesting that this was a planned withdrawal. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
