Scope and Content Temporary camp at Normandykes, City of Aberdeen This Roman temporary camp is at Normandykes in Aberdeenshire. It was built on top of a broad hill and overlooked an old ford over the River Dee. Very little can now be seen at ground level. This is an aerial view of the site. It shows the NE corner of the temporary camp as a cropmark. On the ground, part of a ditch and bank can be traced. The bank is up to 6.0 m wide and 2.0 m high with a 3.0 m wide flat top. The outer ditch is 4.0 m wide. The existence of this temporary marching camp was proved through excavation in 1935. The six entrances were all protected by tutuli.
