Scope and Content View of west side of furnace showing tapping arch and charging house, Bonawe Ironworks, Argyll and Bute Just outside the village of Taynuilt, c.15km east of Oban, is Bonawe Ironworks. Established in 1752-3 by Richard Ford & Company as an outpost of their works in Cumbria, it was leased to Sir Duncan Campbell and the 3rd Earl of Breadalbane for 110 years. Charcoal was fed into the furnace shaft and a fire lit in the hearth. Iron ore and limestone flux were added and molten iron settled at the base of the chimney before being drawn off into the casting house (foundations visible in the foreground). Charcoal for Bonawe was produced using a rotational system of coppicing - trees were cut down and burnt in charcoal kilns over a central fire. Closed in 1874, Bonawe is now in the care of Historic Scotland who have restored these buildings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
