Scope and Content Drawing of stanchion head and gantry stage ('C) in Engine Works, Fairfield Shipbuilding Yard, Govan, City of Glasgow The Engine Works was constructed after 1869 to when the firm moved from a smaller yard at Centre Street to Fairfield Shipbuilding Yard. It was an improvement on other contemporary works both in its scale, and in the rationality of its design. The gantry beam, an iron plate-girder, is bolted to the 'stanchion head'. Beneath it, iron strainer beams are bolted between the stanchions and supported by diagonal struts. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
