Scope and Content Pre-demolition view of New Market, Aberdeen The New Market was built in 1840-2 as part of a slum-clearance and redevelopment scheme. It was one of the many neoclassical works of Archibald Simpson, a merchant's son who practised as an architect after returning from a tour of Italy in 1813-14. Aberdeen, Market Street, Aberdeen Market / Commercial / / Market / DIGITAL IMAGES From 1800-1840, a generation of prestigious young architects led by John Smith and Archibald Simpson remodelled Aberdeen in Grecian neoclassical style and improved the infrastructure to meet the needs of the city's expanding industries.
