Scope and Content 'The Mexican's Hat', Lochend Colliery, North Lanarkshire Known locally as 'The Mexican's Hat', this coal bing is the most visible relic of Lochend Colliery Pit northumber 5. At the pithead, which comprised at least four buildings, a two-storey brick-built engine house is the best-preserved structure visible today. The bing comprises a complex crow's foot bing (the brim of the hat) built-up over a long period of time by tram-ways, with a conical heap at the centre (the crown of the hat) formed by a conveyor belt. Lochend Colliery Pit Number 5 opened in 1880 and was operated by the Brownside Coal Company. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
