Scope and Content Fort at Westerwood, North Lanarkshire This Roman fort is at Westerwood. It was built on an N-facing slope above the River Kelvin. The fort was one of the stations along the Antonine Wall, which abuts the N side of the fort itself. This is an aerial view of the site. The fort can be seen as a series of cropmarks below and to the right of the modern buildings. To the left of the buildings is the Antonine Wall. The Military Way can be seen running through the centre of the buildings. The fort was first excavated in 1932 by Sir George Macdonald. It established the layout of the fort, and Macdonald also tentatively identified the Military Way and an annexe to the S of the fort. Further work done in 1974-5 found no traces of these.
