Scope and Content Fort and temporary camps at Castledykes, South Lanarkshire This fort and temporary camps are at Castledykes, near Carstairs. They stand on a plateau overlooking a number of natural routes through the area. There were at least three phases of occupation at the site. The temporary camps lie NE and NW of the fort. This is an aerial view of the site. It shows one of the temporary camps. This lies 130 m N of the fort, and is one of the several camps around the fort. The break in the line of defences represents the entrance. This is in the SW side. The fort was probably first built during Agricola's third or fourth Scottish campaign, in the AD 80s, and was abandoned about AD 86. It was re-built about AD 142, with minor alterations in the AD 150s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
