Scope and Content Architectural fragment, Gretna old church and parish church, Dumfries and Galloway Gretna old parish church probably lies on the site of its medieval precursor, first recorded in 1170. Built in 1790, the church incorporates masonry of an older structure, perhaps 17th century, and the churchyard contains a number of medieval grave-slabs. This piece of carving appears to be a sandstone block which has been dressed. Its sides are coped and in high relief is a cat-like head, badly preserved, carved within a niche. A similar block shows a cat-like head with large, bulbous eyes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
