Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating David James, Applegarth churchyard, Dumfries and Galloway This gravestone commemorates David James, a local smallholder, who died in 1746. These figures, hand in hand, presumably represent David and a son. Both wear the long, full-skirted coats typical of the 18th century. The figure on the left grasps a palm frond, a symbol of the immortal soul's triumph over death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
