Description Stones of Stenness: W. ditch terminal.

Catalogue Number SC 345618

Scope and Content Henge monument and stone circle at Stones of Stenness, Orkney Islands This henge is defined by a broad ditch and outer bank and has a single entrance on the NW. Cultivation has almost completely destroyed any trace of the bank and ditch. A stone circle, which may have originally comprised 12 stones, lies in the interior. This photograph shows the W terminal of the ditch of the henge. The ditch was cut through rock and was up to 4m broad and 2.3m deep. Grooved Ware was found above the primary silt layers in the dtch. This henge survives as a slight earthwork and is situated on a broad flat promontory at the S end of the Bridge of Brodgar. Excavations were carried out in 1973-4 to investigate the interior and examine the relationship between the henge and stone circle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
