Scope and Content Henge monument and stone circle at Ring of Brodgar, Orkney Islands This henge is defined by an impressive rock-cut ditch which surrounds a stone circle. No surface traces of an external bank now remain, and the 1973 excavation failed to find convincing evidence for its existence. Two entrance causeways cross the ditch. The scale of the ditch can be appreciated from this photograph. When originally dug, the ditch was 10m broad and up to 3m deep. An arc of the stone circle can also be seen. The stones lie between 5m and 6m inside the inner edge of the ditch. This henge still survives as an earthwork and is situated on gently undulating ground on a narrow strip of land between the Lochs of Stenness and Harray. In 1973, trenches were dug across the presumed bank and ditch, but no finds were recorded. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
