Scope and Content Reconstructed elevation of New Institution for the Formation of Character (also known as 'the reformer, Robert Owen's New Institution') New Lanark, Lanarkshire New Lanark was founded in 1785 by David Dale and Richard Arkwright. It passed to Dale's son-in-law, Robert Owen, in 1799. Owen developed the village into a model community, aiming to make it both profitable and humane. The 'Institution for the Formation of Character' was an important part of the plan of the reformer, Robert Owen, for a model village. It was devoted to improving the education, morality and self-respect of the workers. In its heyday as a public building, the Institution would have been an impressive building. It was built in the fashionable neoclassical style, complete with a portico in front of the main entrance. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
