Scope and Content Cast-iron wall-tie on 'New Institution for the Formation of Character' at New Lanark, Lanarkshire New Lanark was founded in 1785 by David Dale and Richard Arkwright. It passed to Dale's son-in-law, Robert Owen in 1799. Owen developed the village into a model community, aiming to make it both profitable and humane. Wall-ties like this were a common way of strengthening the structure buildings. A rod is attached to the metal plate and runs through the building Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
