Scope and Content General view of the interior of the meat market, Fountainbridge, Edinburgh The meat market at Nos 56-8 Fountainbridge in Edinburgh was designed by Robert Morham in 1884. This is a general view of the inside of the meat market from the north end. The hooks which would be used for hanging the carcasses are visible, and the weighing machine for the meat can be seen at the right side of the image. Fountainbridge has been associated with the meat trade for centuries. This was due to being on an important trade route into the city. Markets and slaughter houses were usually close together. The allied industry of tanning was found nearby in West Port. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
