Scope and Content Still-house at Tamdhu Distillery, Knockando, Moray The distillery was built in 1896-7 by the Tamdhu Distillery Company Ltd. It was owned by a consortium of blenders. In 1899 it was bought by the Highland Distilleries Company Ltd. It was closed between 1927-47. This is a good example of an older style of still-house. The still, which is second from the right, was installed in the 1890s. The stills and apparatus are linked by an arrangement of ladders and gangways. To make whisky, barley is allowed to germinate into green malt. This is dried, milled and mixed with hot water to make wort which is extracted and fermented with yeast. The results are distilled to produce raw whisky which is then matured in casks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
