Scope and Content Greenlaw Tolbooth Steeple, Scottish Borders Patrick Hume, later 1st Earl of Marchmont, built Greenlaw Tolbooth after persuading Parliament to restore Greenlaw's status as head town of Berwickshire. Only the 17th century church tower used as its steeple remains of the tolbooth. A 18th-century minister had the windows raised to stop the inmates socialising with his congregation. However, a narrow opening into the church still allowed prisoners to hear services. Some of their graffiti survives. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
