Scope and Content Plans of Tain Tolbooth, Highland Tain Tolbooth was built using a grant of 500 merks from the Convention of Royal Burghs, supplemented by voluntary collections from many Scottish churches. It replaced a 17th-century tolbooth which was in disrepair and suffering from severe storm-damage. The contractor, Alexander Stronach, started construction in 1706 but seems to have stopped at the level of the parapet in 1708 after he went over budget. Stronach restarted in 1712 but then paused to work on Dornoch Castle in 1720. He finally completed the tolbooth in 1733. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
