Scope and Content Elevation of Dalkeith Tolbooth, Midlothian In 1759 Dalkeith Tolbooth was 'the private prison and court house of the Regality of Dalkeith and the property of the family of Buccleuch... past all memory.' It was probably built in the second half of the 17th century to replace an earlier one. The tolbooth became known as Scientific Hall because Dalkeith Scientific Association met there in 1835. However, it held a jail until 1841. Outside, stones mark the site of the burgh gibbet. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
