Scope and Content Elevation of Crail Tolbooth, Fife The lower part of the steeple may date from 1517, but most of the tolbooth was probably built after the burgh council ordered the 'bigging off ane towbuth' in 1598. In 1607 they applied to the Convention of Royal Burghs for some of the costs. The steeple was repaired after 1776 when small round windows were added and the top two storeys were rebuilt. In 1886 the council rejected plans to raise the height for a new burgh clock. A larger staircase was put in 1887. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
