Scope and Content Dumbarton Tolbooth, Dumbarton and Clydebank Dumbarton Tolbooth stood on the north side of the High Street. By 1819 it was too easy to escape from, and not worth repairing. It was built with separate rooms for the council and the sheriff court. However, from 1794, to make room for prisoners, both shared the court-room. The old council-chamber was then converted for prison use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
