Scope and Content Carillon inside Glasgow Tolbooth Steeple, Glasgow Glasgow Tolbooth Steeple dates from the 17th century and is all that remains of Glasgow's tolbooth which stood on the same site from the 15th century. The seventh floor of the steeple still houses a late 19th-century carillon for playing the sixteen bells hanging in the belfry. This probably replaced an older carillon as the list of carillon players goes back to 1738: Rodger Redburn 1738-65; Collett of London ?-1765; J Holden ?-1772; Joshua Campbell 1772-1801; John Weir 1801-30; James Bayne 1830-75; Thomas Bayne 1875-86; Thomas Herbert 1886-1924; William Herbert 1924-38; Jessie Herbert 1938-73; Warrin Brown 1973.
