Belfry, bell, detail of inscription band

SC 336924

Description Belfry, bell, detail of inscription band

Catalogue Number SC 336924

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of B 58219

Scope and Content Inscription on burgh bell inside Crail Tolbooth, Fife The lower part of the steeple may date from 1517, but most of the tolbooth was probably built after the burgh council ordered the 'bigging off ane towbuth' in 1598. In 1607 they applied to the Convention of Royal Burghs for some of the costs. The burgh bell is inscribed: IC BEN GHEGOTEN INT IAER ONS HEEREN MCCCCCXX ('I was cast in the year of Our Lord 1520'). The three medallions depict the child Jesus, Mary and Jesus, and the coat of arms of Mechelen in Belgium. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
