Scope and Content Broch of Burrian, Orkney The Broch of Burrian stands on the shore at the S tip of North Ronaldsay. The remains have been eroded by the sea and have also been incorporated into the sheep dyke. On the landward side traces of defensive ramparts can be seen. This is a view of the interior of the broch. The ledge which supported the first floor is only 1 m above ground level. Above the ledge, by 1.3 m the walls are stepped inwards. These are both unusual features. There is one cell at ground level. The site was excavated during the 1870s. Most of the finds were from the Iron Age and Pictish times. A large number of animal bones, including pig, dog, horse and cattle, were also found. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
