Scope and Content Anstruther Wester Town Hall (rear), Fife Anstruther Wester Town Hall replaced the old tolbooth which was so small that the council had to meet in a private house if there was a prisoner. An older, bigger, tolbooth was washed away by a storm in the 17th century. The council built the town house to share the next-door church's tower, using it as a steeple. This caused problems - in 1827 the council had to win a dispute with the kirk session over who owned the burgh clock and bell. The bell was cast by George Watt of Edinburgh in 1779 and the clock was made by Ritchies of Edinburgh in 1868. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
