Scope and Content Anstruther Wester Town Hall (front), Fife Anstruther Wester Town Hall replaced the old tolbooth which was so small that the council had to meet in a private house if there was a prisoner. An older, bigger, tolbooth was washed away by a storm in the 17th century. The council chamber was on the first floor, where the windows have been enlarged. The ground floor, which has modern entrances, was a schoolroom until 1827, then a prison and a shop. Before that, the prison was in the steeple. The bell was cast by George Watt of Edinburgh in 1779 and the clock was made by Ritchies of Edinburgh in 1868. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
