Scope and Content Stranraer Castle, Dumfries and Galloway Stranraer Castle was bought by the town council in 1815. In 1820 the Commissioners of Supply accepted the plans to convert it to a jail. A new prison replaced it in 1847, but it was still used as an occasional lock-up until 1907. The arched windows in the upper storeys were added when the castle became a prison in 1820. The first floor was supposed to be converted to a court-room, but no evidence that this work was carried out now survives. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
