Scope and Content View of Town House on Front Street, Inveraray, Argyll and Bute The first design of the Town House for the new town of Inveraray was prepared by the architect John Adam (1721-92) in 1750. It was built to a modified design between 1754 and 1757 by George Hunter, mason to the Duke of Argyll. The building is three-storeyed with a five-bayed north front, seen here, and a three-bayed pedimented centrepiece projecting 0.3m. The ground floor of the centrepiece forms a triple arcade. The window (left) and door (right) have round-arched frames. The original design incorporated a ground-floor prison with one or more vaulted cells at the rear, a first-floor court-room which was used for the twice-yearly crown courts and as a council-chamber, and an upper flat which was adapted as a grammar school.
