Scope and Content Drawing Room, Leithen Lodge, Innerleithen, Scottish Borders Leithen Lodge, built in the early 19th century as a keeper's house in the valley of the Leithen Water, was remodelled in 1885-7 by Sydney Mitchell who also designed the sumptuous interiors. The house was photographed c.1890 by Harry Bedford Lemere. This white-painted room is panelled to door height, and has a bold floral frieze and an elegant plasterwork ceiling in the style of Robert Adam. The built-in cupboards, with a canopied recess at the centre, are characteristic of Mitchell's interiors. The house generated its own electricity from a hydro-electric scheme powered by a loch further up the valley. The unusual lamps around the walls of the drawing room were designed to 'plug in' to live pads in the base of each wall bracket. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
