Scope and Content Dining Room, Leithen Lodge, Innerleithen, Scottish Borders Leithen Lodge, an early 19th-century house in the valley of the Leithen Water, was remodelled in 1885-7 by Sydney Mitchell who designed the interiors with Scottish Arts and Crafts details. The house was photographed c.1890 by Harry Bedford Lemere. This elegant room has a late 17th- or early 18th-century style chimneypiece with an Arts and Crafts firegrate. The walls, also in the Arts and Crafts style, have a leaf-patterned wallpaper and a 'naturalistic' frieze with bold, swirling flowers. Although the house generated its own electricity from a hydro-electric scheme powered by a loch further up the valley, the light it produced was harsh and dazzling. Candlelight, with its more gentle light, has clearly been chosen to light the diner table. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
